Chapter Ten

The asymmetrical dark red dress had a single strap over the left shoulder, and the skirt was slit down the long right side while the left side of the dress reached lower thigh. The black high heels, matching black clutch purse, and an emerald and diamond necklace with matching earrings finished the look along with a modicum of makeup. She also had her long light buttery blonde hair up.

Rebecca smiled, “You look fantastic, Ash.”

Ashley smiled back, “Thanks, mom, so do you.”

It was true enough, Rebecca looked exquisite and sophisticated. She still felt like she was playing a role when she got dressed up like this, and really enjoyed it, but maybe one day she would actually feel natural in the trappings of this new life.

The two of them headed downstairs to where the men were waiting, father and son looking great in tuxes. They were headed out to a gala that was half businesspersons rubbing shoulders and making contacts and deals, and half charity ball raising funds for scholarships, both art and scholastic. It was going to be dinner, live music with an orchestra, and dancing, her in-laws had purchased two more plates when they’d learned that her and Crandall had leave on that three day weekend.

She smiled, “I think we broke them.”

Rebecca grinned, “You may be right.”

Crandall snorted, “You look ravishing, Ash.”

Robert just drank in his wife a little longer, and said, “Quite.”

She hoped her and Crandall would still be that in love after three decades as she took his arm and they headed out to the car, which was waiting in the driveway. It was a long and sleek dark gray limousine with silver trim and tinted one-way windows, and inside it was plush black leather seating, a minibar, and a divider wall. The two of them sat in the seat facing the back, across from his parents.

“Anything I need to know?”

Crandall teased, “Looking for a mission briefing?”

She blushed, “Yes.”

Rebecca laughed, “Nothing major should be going on, we’re actually going for the charity. Just making contacts with any new players, and touching base with our current business partners, the usual. Enjoy ourselves too.”

Right, so just look engaged and happy to be there on Crandall’s arm, that she could do easily. Maintaining connections, not new business deals.

Robert said, “The venue is the art museum. They’ll have several pieces of art created by former scholarship students on display, as well as the orchestra itself. There’ll also be a holographic display of former students of the sciences that we’ve sponsored, and the impact they’ve had on business and technology.”

He waved, “It’s a little shameless actually, people should donate to improve the lives of those less fortunate and so that young brilliant minds don’t go to waste, alone. Meaningful art is also critical to a healthy society. But seeing it as an investment that might just impact what they themselves hang on their walls, or for the future innovators in their companies, makes them more generous.”

She nodded, “Shameless but effective, and in a good cause.
